Founded in 1870, this building combines Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles and has been an integral part of the city’s commercial and cultural history. In 2021, after more than a decade of renovations, SANAA was tasked with revitalizing this space, transforming it into a multifunctional complex that includes shops, offices, residences, and a luxury hotel.

Située sur les rives de la Seine, La Samaritaine est l’un des grands magasins les plus emblématiques de Paris. SANAA’s Project The main challenge for SANAA was to balance respect for the historic heritage with contemporary needs. One of the most remarkable interventions was the addition of an undulating glass façade on one section of the building. This element not only brings a modern and fluid aesthetic but also harmoniously interacts with the surrounding historic buildings.

Inside, original elements such as mosaics, staircases, and wrought iron railings were preserved while incorporating modern materials and technologies to ensure the building’s functionality and sustainability.
